Tour Description:
A few kilometers away from the busy Barcelona stands one of the most impressive mountains of Catalonia. The tour begins at 8:15AM. Just a few kilometers away driving to the north in a air-conditioned and comfortable vehicle (in about 1 hour) you will be in the sacred monastery of Montserrat surrounded by a majestic rocky landscape that will leave you spechless.
Montserrat transmits peace and tranquility mixed with large doses of adventure and mystery.
Visit the monastic centre of Catalunya, home of the famous Lady of Montserrat, popularly known as La Moreneta (the Dark One), due to the dark color of her skin. La Moreneta is a truly beautiful 12th century Romanesque polychrome carving with a baby Jesus on Her lap.
Afterwards we give you the opportunity to take hike in the paths surrounding the Monastery . We suggest you to discover the paths less walked of the magnificent Montserrat and uncover the secrets of the most impressive parts of this rock formation. We will see the sanctuary from the distance, which has been in use for almost 1000 years for pilgrims, who have been inspired by this spectacular mountain. In addition, If you wish we invite you to discover an old hermitage where pilgrims retreated.
At 1pm on weekdays (12am on Sundays) there is the opportunity to hear one of Europe’s nicest children’s choirs. “Escolania” is comprised of more than fifty boys, from nine to fourteen years old, who come from all over Catalonia to take part in daily prayer at the Sanctuary.

Our tour was a private tour of the Montserrat Monastery and Natural Park and also the Catalonian 3 course meal. Juan was our tour guide. We decided to book this private tour vs. a group tour or self guided tour, which you can do. We enjoyed the one on one interaction with Juan. He was not only very informative about Montserrat, but we learned a lot about the Catalan culture throughout our day. He adjusted our itinerary as we needed. My wife was not able to hike as far as she would have liked (knee issues), but we were able to take the funicular to the top of the mountain and were able to hike along a much less traveled secondary path, that most were unaware of. It gave us spectacular views without a lot of people and noise. While at the monastery, Juan treated us to a Catalan dessert, Mel i Mato. It was fantastic. The restaurant we went to in the afternoon was out of this world! A small place that we would never find on our own. Barbara and Juan from Living It had scoped out this spot as the place to take their tour groups. We feasted on a three course meal. It was actually more food than we could eat, but it was fantastic. The Crema Catalana is similar to flan, but it has its own creamy texture. I wish I could say more about the whole experience. It was worth every penny!! I highly recommend a private tour like this. You will not be disappointed! We highly recommend Living It Tours!
