6:00pm to midnight approximately

Tour departs from Barcelona at 6pm in a comfortable vehicle to Berga, small beautiful walled city, located one hour from Barcelona. In Berga you will enjoy a walking tour of the old quarter with your local guide, and gain an idea of the city’s history and architecture. Moreover, Berga will be very busy with traditional actuations and typical decorations extra for the special festivity the citizens are celebrating.

The city was founded in the 12th century, its houses clustering around the castle. The city walls, remains of which are still standing, were built in the 14th century. Berga has been involved in many violent conflicts in over the course of its history. Much of the city was destroyed during the Guerra dels Segadors, or War of the Reapers, and it was also an important focus of activity during the Carlist Wars. The city did not begin to recover until all these armed conflicts ceased and industrialization began in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

After the 1hour tour, the Sun is already down, thus it is time to join locals in their special celebration. La Patum is going to start!

La Patum is a popular and historic devotional festival which is held annually in the town of Berga during the week of Corpus Christi. Its origin should be traced back to the old theatrical plays performed during the Corpus processions, which sought to educate, moralize and enlighten the population so as to afford them with a more in-depth insight into the Holy Scriptures. La Patum was in 2008 inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

With the passage of time, however, these theatrical plays began taking on their own magnitude and won support among the people, more so for their recreational role than their instructive nature. Hence they began to shed their original meaning, altering their appearance and their role, and thereby deteriorating until only the most festive parts of the performances were to remain. The pitch of the commotion of the processional cortege was raised, particularly prior to and subsequent to the procession.

Although it is difficult to ascertain the original symbolism of La Patum, an experienced guide will explain everything about this old and deeply-rooted tradition. So, be ready to learn about the secrets behind this centenary and unique festival.

The group will see the representations and dances from a privileged place, from where you will not miss a detail. Hey! The more adventurous can join locals and dance between the crowds celebrating this special and important event (entirely optional).

This was a fabulous tour. Pictures do not do justice to the celebration. The experience was made even better by our wonderful local guide Alex Puiol. This is certainly a one-of-a-kind experience.
